{"id":1185,"date":"2010-09-19T15:13:03","date_gmt":"2010-09-19T22:13:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.giftcardadvocate.org\/news\/?p=1185"},"modified":"2010-09-20T14:19:28","modified_gmt":"2010-09-20T21:19:28","slug":"restaurant-com-gift-certificates-come-with-limits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.giftcardadvocate.org\/news\/?p=1185","title":{"rendered":"Restaurant.com gift certificates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Restaurant.com offers discounted restaurant gift certificates.\u00a0 A typical deal might be a $25 gift certificates for $10.\u00a0 My wife and I have purchased discounted restaurant gift certificates from Restaurant.com before and have not had problems.\u00a0 But, according to a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abcactionnews.com\/dpp\/money\/consumer\/dont_waste_your_money\/is-there-a-catch-with-restaurant.com%3F\" target=\"_blank\">ABC News story<\/a>, some people using these certificates are having problems, and it seems that many of them are related to misunderstandings, so it is important to understand how these work before you buy.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing to be aware of is that gift certificates offered only in paper form are immune to the new Federal Reserve gift card rules, and thus can carry expiration dates and fees where gift cards are strictly limited.\u00a0 Restaurant.com says that the restaurant gift certificates they issue do not have expiration dates, so this shouldn&#8217;t be a problem with Restaurant.com but is just something to be aware of in general.<\/p>\n<p>The gift certificates do have some restaurant specific limitations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Restaurants may not accept gift certificates on weekends or may accept them for certain meals only (i.e. dinner only).<\/li>\n<li>In some cases the gift certificates can&#8217;t be applied to alcohol purchases, tax, or tips.<\/li>\n<li>Most restaurants have minimum purchase rules, meaning that you must often purchase a minimum amount when using the gift certificate.\u00a0 Restaurant.com says that the average minimum amount is $35 but some do have a higher minimum amount.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>None of these are show stoppers in my opinion but if you aren&#8217;t aware of them, you might be disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>Specific terms for any individual restaurant are available both before and after you buy, so be sure and look for them.\u00a0 One place you can find them is &#8220;specific restrictions&#8221;
